Accreta Expert: Professor Sally Collins
In honor of Accreta Awareness Month, worldwide PAS expert Professor Sally Collins, BSc BMBCh DPhil FRCOG, joined NAF from the UK on October 10, 2024 for an engaging live international presentation on “Placenta Accreta - it’s a Spectrum” as well as sharing her work on bringing more academic awareness to the true patient journey of placenta accreta followed by an interview and community Q&A.
Viewers joined via our Facebook and YouTube channels to watch the live presentation and participated by posting their own questions and comments real time throughout the live stream event.
Dr. Sally Collins is a professor at the University of Oxford in the UK and currently leads the Oxford Placenta Accreta Team. Sally is considered to be one of the top worldwide experts in placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). She co-authored both national (RCOG) and international (FIGO) guidelines for the classification, diagnosis and management of placenta accreta spectrum and was the lead author on the IS-PAS evidence based guideline for intra-partum management of PAS.
Sally is also working with NHS England to develop a national network for the improved management of PAS. She represents the UK to and is Chair of the International Society for PAS (IS-PAS) and belongs to the European Placenta Group. Sally is a huge advocate for advancing the maternal patient experience of placenta accreta spectrum and has authorized numerous publications on this topic.

In October 2021 in honor of Accreta Awareness Month, Dr. Brett Einerson, MD MPH joined NAF for an engaging live presentation. Discussion topics included who is at risk of accreta, the importance of pre-delivery diagnosis, why you should get a second opinion and how better outcomes are achieved by receiving care from a multidisciplinary team at a hospital that has experience treating accreta.
For the December 2021 installment of our Accreta Expert Interview Series Dr. Daniela Carusi, MD & Dr. Kara Brown, MD joined NAF to discuss Placenta Accreta Spectrum & Maternal Mental Health. Topics included medical aspects of placenta accreta as well as maternal mental health, the patient experience and how to fully support women through their accreta experience.
In October 2022 in honor of Accreta Awareness Month, Dr. Karin Fox, MD joined NAF for an engaging live presentation on placenta accreta spectrum followed by an interview and community Q&A. Topics included how placenta accreta is a spectrum, the importance of individualized care and factors to consider when interpreting the literature.
A history of prior C-Section is the most common risk factor for developing the pregnancy complication Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS). In honor of Cesarean Awareness Month 2022, Obstetrician Dr. Neel Shah, MD joined NAF for a special live presentation on how cesareans have become the most common surgery in the United States, how this has affected rates of placenta accreta and what we can do about it. In November 2022 Dr. Lisa Zuckerwise, MD joined NAF for an engaging live presentation on conservative management of placenta accreta spectrum (alternative to hysterectomy) followed by an interview and community Q&A.
